A Ribbon of Hope- Promoting Breast Cancer Prevention
Five years ago, I was inspired to implement a fundraiser to raise money for breast cancer research when family and friends were diagnosed with the disease. As I began to research organizations to target our fund-raising efforts, I was brought face to face with the hard facts of how prevalent this disease is. That was a life-changing moment. Since then, I have worked as an advocate for the National Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation by raising money to not only find a cure, but to help families of individuals diagnosed with breast cancer.
Something that will always resonate with me was an encounter I had during one of my presentations with a woman who shared her story about her mother’s diagnosis. Her mother was not afraid of what the outcome could be but hopeful for the future she planned on spending with her family of 25. Through positive thinking and early diagnosis, this woman is a role model not only for her family, but for her local community through the strength and courage she possesses. She is just one example of the many individuals who motivate me to continually work to grow and develop my platform and expand my audience. In the past five years, I have been touched, inspired and brought to tears by countless stories of both women—and yes, men—impacted by breast cancer. I have developed a website that shares these stories, serves as a resource tool for breast cancer information, and provides information about the Miss America Organization as well.
I have a love for public speaking, a biology degree, and a passion for science. Using these talents, I created a three-point presentation. Its goal is to: 1) Build awareness and support for the breast cancer community; 2) Arm individuals with information about prevention; 3) Share stories of survivors who have accepted the challenges and fears breast cancer brings.
I was work to support breast cancer research and prevention by aligning with the Susan G. Komen Foundation & National Breast Cancer Research Foundation to serve as an ambassador to educate young women about breast cancer. Young women are often forgotten when we talk about breast cancer, but they belong in the conversation. I have developed a program that educates them about how their current habits and lifestyles can affect their future breast cancer risk. I plan to target college students with presentations and written communications to help them understand that a future of good health starts now. I hope to one day teach America about important and simple changes they can make to eliminate this disease.
My mission through A Ribbon of Hope is to educate people about breast cancer and prevention. My vision is for individuals and families to face a breast cancer diagnosis directly and look beyond their fears to see the strength, hope, and beauty that lie beneath it. I believe when we as individuals accept the challenge to look at our fears directly we can change the world.
Breast cancer awareness and prevention is now engrained in my life and a passion I will carry forever. As Miss Minnesota, I look forward to spreading my own personal platform throughout the state along with working as an advocate for the Children’s Miracle Network and the Miss America Organization. I hope this coming year will be a year of change in Minnesota. Through my belief in servant-style leadership, I look forward to using the power of the crown to not just share my passion with others, but to continue to work for and learn from those throughout the state of Minnesota.
