Frequently Asked Questions
1) When did you start to participate in pageants? What got you interested initially?
The first pageant I competed in was Miss Twin Cities 2010. I was looking one night online about scholarship opportunities and came across pageants online. When I began to look into it it described what the Miss America Organization was all about and the qualities and attributes that its titleholders possessed When I read that description is when I knew I wanted to sign up for my 1st pageant! It stated that the Miss America Organization is made up of young women dedicated to scholastic achievement and community service. Community service had always been a passion of mine which my mom instilled in me since childhood by always bringing me along to various volunteer opportunities and in college I had accepted the challenge to keep that a regular part of my life when I chose to volunteer on my campus and in the local community. Realizing that pageants weren't just about the women underneath the crown but how the crown can serve as a microphone for their platform and the Children's Miracle Network is truly why I continued to compete in this organization. I hope to instill my passion on others and spread the word about his amazing organization that I now see as one that I will take with me for forever.
2) What are your duties as Miss HOTL? What has been your most memorable moment as Miss HOTL thus far?
My duties as Miss HOTL are to represent the members of the Perham and surrounding lake area community throughout my year of service. During this year I will volunteer and be a representative for their community, while also sharing my personal platform with them through education and service. I do not call it a reign as some may call it, but rather I like to focus on it as a year of service to the Perham area and the state of Minnesota. My most memorable moment as Miss HOTL was at an event that we did a few weeks ago in Perham. It was the "Catholic Daughters Association" Christmas fundraiser and fashion show. At this event both my self and Miss Perham, Paige Meyer, were asked to share a bit about our platform and the Miss America Organization. When we showed up to this event we did not know what to expect, and upon arrival to a room over 200+ women we were asked to speak for about 5-7 mins each. While for many speaking on a whim may be nerve-wrecking especially to a crowd of that size but for some reason that day I did not not feel nervous at all. I was calmed by the fact of how important my platform was to the demographic of the room which I was speaking to. Well... the words that I shared must have been both relate able, comforting, and inspirational, because after I spoke I have a dozen women come up to me to share names and stories of women that are in their lives and have been impacted my this disease. I was also asked by the Catholic Daughters Association to help head up a state wide walk that they are trying to do for the year 2013 and feel that I would be a great representative and speaker on teh cause as they are in hopes of making it a breast cancer walk, I was totally taken aback and honored that they would like me to represent and help in the development and creation of this cause for a walk! :) The most significant part of this story is that I have been in contact with some of the women from that day and they have constantly been in my prayers and their stories have helped add to the continued development of my platform.
3) Can you speak a bit about your platform?
My platform is "A Ribbon of Hope: Breast Cancer Prevention and Awareness." An interesting fact is that when I started competting this was not my original platform. I started pagents with the overall platform of volunteerism and was promoting the importance of volunteering. When I continued competeing I realized that I wanted something that I was more knowledgeable about and could speak more about concretely, while volunteering is vitally important I always found myself takling about my personal vounteer work with breast cancer awareness. While in collged I had developed an awarness week for breast cancer during the month of october, soke at a regional conference to over 2,500 studetns about how they could create their own awarness week on their campus, and raised over $4,000 for research. Throught hose four year of work breast cancer became a passion of mine and a casue that I became ever more tied to and found myself donating more and more of my time to. Thus, when I continued competing I choose this as my platform specificially because it was somethign I more personally related to whithin the realm of volunteerism. As Miss Heart of the Lakes I hope to continue to promote my platofm and exapnd my audiance of education on prevention from just college aged men and women to that of both a yonger and older demographic as well. I plan to promote education of preventable measures that we can incorporate into our dailiy lives and also promote education on support for those affected by this disease and their surrouding family members and friends. I hope to not only increase education but also raise important funds to help in the proces sof findinga cure. My work and support of breast cancer awarness and prventin is not somthign that will end with my year of service as Miss Heart of the Lakes, but rather it is a passion of mine that I hope to develop and solidify through this year and know it will be part of my future voluneer work even after this year.
4) What's your advise to young women / girls who are interested in participating in the Miss MN program?
My advice would be if you fall into two categories that you should give the Miss America and Miss Minnesota organization a try would be if: you are in pursuit of developing your personal and professional goals while also love to serve those around you, or if you are strong int eh direction you are headed in professionally and have a passion for service and God given talents that you can share with everyone to bring joy to those around you. If you fit either of these, which in my mind is everyone! Thus, if you are looking to see who you have the potential to become or if you are already a strong young women step up and share your gifts, talents, and dedication to service with the community...it would be a shame to not share your potential with those around you! :)
